 — Florence@ 9:37 am

Most of blog readers asked whether its true that Lake Natron is being turned to some sort of extraction and mining, well as Yellow Masai team we did some research about Lake Natron and we do hope that we have answered your questions.

In 2009,the headline news:Lake Natron  faces renewed threats from soda ash mining,Tanzanian government agency is seeking to buy mining equipments for large scale of soda ash from Lake Natron which is the most important breeding site for lesser flamingo (phoeniconaias),however in 2011 news came up that Tata chemical industry ltd India in  collaboration with government of Tanzania are intending to raise awareness on plans to construct soda ash plant at Lake Natron. Hindustan national glass and industries India is expected to express interest in taking over the project.

April 2011,Tanzanian president ordered the ministry of trade and industry to accelerate the process of building the soda ash plant saying the country was poor and needed to address poverty by exploiting its mineral resources.

Besides that the proposed plant could seriously affect the breeding of this near threatened species, thus putting at risk at 75% of the global lesser flamingo population.
