20th century the lake completely dried up and effectively disappeared, resulting to open land for farming, heavy rain few years later caused the lake to return to existence swallowing up the newly established estate.

The lake and its surrounding are rich in natural bounty, and fertile soil and water supply have made the region one of the Kenya’s prime agricultural region.

It’s surrounded by forests of the yellow barked acacia xanthophlea known as yellow fever tree, its also known as a world class birding destination.

Giraffes wonder among the acacia, buffaloes wallow in the swamp and colobus monkeys call from tree tops while in the lake hippos population sleep the day out in the shallows.

The hell’s gate national park lies besides the lake.

The sunsets are always stunning with the haunting call of a fish eagles high over the lake.

It’s a large rock formation on the Kisumu-Bondo road in western Kenya, Kit-mikayi means “Stones of the first wife” or “First Wife Rocks” in Dholuo, the Luo language.

Long time ago, there was an old man by the name Ngeso who was in great love with the stone. Every day when he woke up in the morning, he could walk into the cave inside the stone and stay there the whole day, and this could force his wife to bring him breakfast and lunch everyday. The old man became passionately in love with this stone to the extent that when people asked his wife his whereabouts, she would answer that he has gone to his first wife (Mikayi) hence the stone of the first wife (Kit Mikayi).

An explanation of the shape of this unique stone is that the structure represents the Luo cultural polygamous family which had the first wife’s house (Mikayi) built further in between on the right hand side was the second wife’s house (Nyachira) while the third wife’s house (Reru) was built on the left hand side of the homestead.

From a long time, this stone has been a sacred place for the villagers to worship in times of trouble.

For further enquiries visit Kit mikayi and find out on your own.
